Great read! Artists struggle so much behind the scenes. Fulfillment in a creative career does not come easy especially when people have their own ideas of what your art should be.
This is terrific. One of my buddies put me on the definition of creativity as being “the ability to connect seemingly unconnected things” and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since. I’ll need to check out this book.
I’m sure you’ve read Rick Rubin’s “The Creative Act,” but if you haven’t, you absolutely need to pick it up.
I haven't, so I'll definitely pick it up this week. For as much as I love all these creative things, this is the first book I've really read about the "philosophy" behind it... everything else has been on the x's and o's and the how-to, so I'm excited to read that. Thanks for the rec.
I also love that definition. I only started thinking of it that way when I read one of The Field Review posts by Jack Westerheide. I forget which one, but he makes a point in there about how he approaches marketing as "professional dot connecting".
Creative Act was the first “philosophy” of creativity book I’ve read as well. And when I read it, I felt the same way as you did — just notes and underlines and marginalia everywhere. I got so much out of it, I wrote a post relating it to parenting of all things! https://cowwedoin.substack.com/p/the-creative-act-of-parenting
“Professional dot connector” is a killer title, @Jack Westerheide.
Anti-shitty idea corporation
It's not much, but it's honest work.

Me thinks: You should write a little about the motorcyle building! 😄
"Inactivity from lack of knowledge is the worst excuse to have, but all too common. "
Lovely turn of phrase! :)
Thanks for reading. I’ve written about it some (and the adventure that followed): https://open.substack.com/pub/christianpung/p/sunday-gravy?r=3xpj3a&utm_medium=ios
Your publication embodies that quote! Excited to see your art journey
What is the name of the book you read?
It’s called “Steal Like an Artist”! I just linked it in the post. If you end up reading it I’d love to know your thoughts.
